American River is a river in the state of California, USA. It is a tributary of the Sacramento River and is approximately 120 miles (193 km) long. The river originates in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and flows through the foothills and Sacramento Valley on its way to the Sacramento River. The climate in the area of the American River is generally Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Average temperatures range from the high twenties in the summer to the low forties in the winter. Average rainfall is around 18 inches (45 cm) per year, with most of it occurring during the winter months.
