Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock located in Stone Mountain, Georgia, in the United States. It is the largest single mass granite rock in the world and is located in the eastern part of the state near the city of Atlanta. The mountain stands 825 feet (251 m) above the surrounding area with a summit elevation of 1,686 feet (514 m). Stone Mountain is the centerpiece of Stone Mountain Park, which encompasses 3,200 acres (13 km2) of natural beauty. The climate of Stone Mountain is humid subtropical, meaning that summers are hot and humid and winters are mild with occasional cold snaps. The average temperature year-round is around 60 °F (16 °C), with highs reaching the mid-80s °F (27 °C) in the summer and lows dipping into the low 30s °F (0 °C) in the winter. Precipitation is plentiful throughout the year, with most rainfall occurring in the summer months.
