It is situated in the far northwest corner of the county and is bordered by the Patuxent River to the north and Washington, D.C. to the south. Jessup is most famously known for its role in the construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the late 1800s. The area was also home to a major prison camp during the Civil War.
